Vitamins- for battling with depression     

Vitamins are needed for the normal functioning of our body. Various studies have thrown light on the fact that intake of some vitamins can help relieve stress and combat depression. Vitamins help in the regulation of hormones in the body and prevent the occurrence of hormonal imbalances one of the major causes of depression. Deficiency of a particular vitamin can also result in insomnia, restlessness, confusion, changes in appetite and depression.

Vitamins for treating Depression:

Vitamin B3 - Niacin: This vitamin plays an important role in the development and maintenance of various body functions. It is required for the proper functioning of the central nervous system (CNS) and boosts the body’s immune system. It is also known to prevent the occurrence of various diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and schizophrenia. It promotes the circulation of oxygen throughout the body and also regulates orthomolecular nutrition that is essential for the performance of various functions of the brain. It also enhances concentration and focus.

Dietary sources of this vitamin include peas, kidney, wheat germ, cereal bran, eggs, fish, meat, beans and liver. The deficiency of this vitamin is known to cause depression and dementia.

Vitamin B6- Pyridoxine Hydrochloride:

This vitamin is essential for the normal functioning of various enzymes in the body. It belongs to the family of b-complex vitamins and is needed for growth and development. It boosts the synthesis of amino acids and regulates various functions of the central nervous system. It also helps in the synthesis of GABA (gamma amino butyric acid). It helps relieve premenstrual depression and treats ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in children. Vitamin B6 also plays an important role in battling sadness, nervousness and gloom.

Dietary sources include liver, kidney, wheat germ, soybeans, fish, eggs, oats, bananas and cereals.

Vitamin B12- cyanocobalamin

This vitamin is essential for proper cell functioning, replication of DNA and stabilizing mood. It helps in the release of higher levels of energy and combats mental instability. It stimulates appetite and promotes growth and maintenance. It also plays a vital role in controlling Alzheimer’s disease. Dietary sources include milk, shellfish, cheese, lungs, and organ meats.
