Hyperforin- antibiotic and antidepressant

Hyperforin is one of the main constituents of St. John’s wort also known asHypericum perforatum. It is known to have a positive impact on the mind and helps in the treatment of mild to moderate depressions. The success of any St. John’s wort formula for treatment of depressive disorders is attributed to the hyperforin content present in the herb. Hyperforin is known to possess various antibiotic and antidepressant properties.

Action of hyperforin:

Hyperforin is known to work by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine at the synapses. Neurotransmitters are chemical substances that play an important role in the transfer of messages to and from the brain. Imbalances in neurotransmitters can result in abnormal behaviors. Once a neurotransmitter is released into the synaptic cleft, the action of enzymes can either deactivate it or reabsorb it and throw it back into the pre-synaptic axon button. This process is known as re-uptake.

Hyperforin is a reuptake inhibitor and helps elevate mood by raising the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. This substance also helps hinder the re-uptake of another neurotransmitter known as GABA, thereby increasing the mind’s ability to relax and eliminates anxiety.

Benefits of Hyperforin:

It helps relieve anxiety, depression and tension.

It helps relax the mind.

It has a positive effect on insomnia and helps induce sleep.

Warning and Precautions:

Hyperforin may be a natural ingredient, but this does not mean that it is completely void of side effects. The side effects accompanying this medicine might not be as harsh as that of other prescription drugs such as sexual dysfunctions, nausea, tiredness, headaches etc.

It is essential for you to notify your doctor before taking hyperforin if you are on any other prescription medications such as mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or lactating.

Do not take it if you are diagnosed with severe depression, bipolar disorder or any other mental illness.

Do not take this medicine in case you have an autoimmune disease.
