Psychotherapy or Talk Therapy

Nature of Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy or talk therapy is about conversing with a person who is gloomy, downcast and loses drive and purpose in doing normal things. A psychotherapist talks to a person to help him/her to come out feelings of sadness, apathy, and restlessness. This therapy is used as an effective treatment of depression and bipolar disorder. It is the therapist’s job to help a patient to cope with signs and symptoms that contribute to one’s mental illness.

Generally, psychotherapy is needed for those people who are stuck in a certain thought process and are lost their way back to normality. These symptoms are common to depression, schizophrenia, panic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, drub dependency, habitual sexual indulgences, etc.

Talk therapy does not merely mean talking about one’s problems and issues, but the therapy should help a person in finding a way out of current mood and situation. The therapist may require a person to do certain things like participation in social gatherings, keeping track of personal behavioral patterns, noting down any difficulties and inconvenient circumstances, etc., that may cause anxiety and stressful conditions.

Efficacy of Talk Therapy

People with irrational behavioral patterns may actually know that their behavior is not working for them anymore and even may really want to change, but still find it difficult to follow rational path. There may be some inspiration, some attraction or some compulsion to follow the irrational path and resign themselves to the realities. They get stuck in this compulsive behavior. This is where a trained therapist comes into the picture to talk to that person and try to get him/her out of the fixation.

People may become defensive when confronted with unhappy situations, such as social denials, personal insults or when their self-esteem is offended. This defensive disposition may result in people becoming moody and gloomy over time. These are the symptoms of depression. When these defenses prove to be ineffective, people will retreat more into their shell and develop irrational and obsessive tendencies, such as phobias and panic reactions. A counselor or a therapist will be able to understand the inner workings of such a affected people by talking to them and gaining their confidence to make them see rational behavior and conduct.

Psychotherapy has varied uses. It helps in understanding the illness and in prevailing over fears and diffidence. The therapy will define new agenda for affected person that will be different from obsessive agenda. A person will be educated to face stressful situations. It helps in realizing the true personality amid wild swings in moods and affected behavior. It will facilitate in understanding the harrowing experiences that occurred earlier in proper perspective. It will also assist in identifying the causative factors that exacerbate the symptoms. It enhances relationships with friends and family.

Psychotherapy will assist people in convincing them of the adverse effects of drinking, drug abuse, and compulsive sexual tendencies.

Psychotherapy (Talk Therapy) Types

There are several categories of psychotherapies that are in usage. Some of the useful

therapies are: cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and group therapy.

Cognitive Therapy: This is a pragmatic approach. When people keep on reacting to circumstances in the same negative way that they react, they will eventually descend into depression. The cognitive therapy will help in breaking the stereo-typed behavioral responses to situations and help in defining a breakaway approach to situations and things that will keep overall behavior in perspective. When compared to medication treatments, the beneficial effects of this therapy will last longer. The relapse rates are comparatively lesser with this therapy than when using medications.

Interpersonal Therapy: Person-to-person relationships play key role in alleviating depression. It is a short-term treatment that focuses on affected person’s relations with other people. This therapy is found to be more efficacious in postpartum depression.

Psychodynamic Therapy: This is time tested and conventional therapy. This therapy delves in past traumatic experiences and their causes for depression in childhood or adolescent years. It is a very long lasting therapy and it takes many years for the effects to be felt. But it is found to be effective.

Group Therapy: It is a general type of therapy. The group nature comes when a person interacts with other people who are also getting the depression therapy and recovering from the effects. The therapy may be any of the therapies mentioned above. This therapy is guided by a professional therapist.
