Migraine aura is a sensory feeling that is somewhat common before a migraine attack. There are different types of impressions that constitute a migraine aura:
- Visual aura- blurred vision, aural aura- buzzing sounds heard.
- Olfactory aura- smells that are not present being felt,
- Tactile aura- other physical sensations.
Abnormal proceedings in the brain cause these auras.
The symptoms of migraine aura are:
Aura precedes the headache by around 20 minutes, lasting from 10- 25 minutes. There are very rare an occasion that an aura is not followed by a headache. The symptoms of visual aura are:
- Flickering spots or star like objects visible
- Floating lines in a zigzag pattern
- Loss of vision in one eye
- Blurred vision
- Black outs
- Numb feeling
- Certain parts of the body experience a tingling feeling
- Feeling dizzy
- Having difficulty with speech
Causes
The causes of migraine aura have not been established till date. Bust some researches believe it to be like an electro or chemical wave moving in the part of the brain dealing with visual signs called virtual cortex. The spreading of the wave may even cause hallucinations. There can be a number of factors that trigger such a migraine including diet, stress, fatigue, change in environment and unusually bright lights and strong smells.
The factors that might be a risk for development of migraine with or without aura:
Over indulgence in sexual activity
Gender- In women the chances of getting a migraine are 3 times more than that in men.
Family history- Migraine is also found to be hereditary in nature.
Hormonal changes in women- In phases of hormonal changes such as pregnancy mensturation or menopause women tend to experience migraine.
Medication and therapies- Migraine can also get triggered by regular intake of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy
Foods- Certain foods such as monosodium glutamae, processed foods, chocolates etc. can cause migraine.
Smoking- Nicotine consumption can trigger a migraine attack.
Alcohol- excessive intake of alcohol or wine can also trigger a migraine attack.
Stress, over exercising and tension are also risk factors for migraine.
Treatment
- Regular exercise
- Stress management
- Dietary control of foods that trigger a migraine.
- Relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing and recreation.
- Alternative therapies such as shiatsu, spa therapy, massage, aromatherapy and acupuncture can prevent migraine attacks and aura.
