Surmontil: Drug Information
Generic name: Trimipramine
Uses of Surmontil:
Surmontil is used in the treatment of depression, particularly endogenous depression. It has also proved beneficial for treating ulcers. This dibenzazepine tricyclic antidepressant boasts of anti muscarinic properties and works by preventing the neuronal reuptake of non-adrenaline in the central nervous system (CNS).
Dosage:
It is essential for you to take the medication as prescribed by your physician in order to avoid any side effects. You must also not stop taking the medication abruptly without the consent of your doctor as it may worsen some of the symptoms of the disorder you are being treated for. The drug can be ingested with or without food.
Earning and Precautions:
Do not take Surmontil if you are hypersensitive to it.
It should not be given to patients with recent MI.
It should not be taken if you have been diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias, heart block or any other cardiovascular disease.
This medicine is not meant for infants and children.
Caution is advised along with regular monitoring when administering the drug to patients diagnosed with mania, severe liver disease and narrow angle glaucoma.
Surmontil should not be give with anesthesia.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating before taking this medicine.
Do not consume alcohol with this medication.
Drug Interactions:
Surmontil should not be given with barbiturates and methylphenidate as it reduces the plasma levels with the former and increases them with the latter.
Do not take this medicine of you are taking other medicines like guanethidine or methyldopa.
Surmontil should not be taken with sympathomimetics as it increases hypertension.
It should not be co-administered with mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) as it may result in hyperpyrexia, convulsions and even death with mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Side effects:
Some of the most common side effects ofSurmontil include drowsiness, headache, orthostatic hypotension and tachycardia in elderly, peripheral neuropathy, tremor, ataxia, seizures, tinnitus, delirium, confusion, stomatitis, gastric irritation, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions,
Overdose:
Surmontil overdose can result in hypotension, convulsions, CNS depression and coma. In case of an overdose of the medication, you must report to your doctor at the earliest or contact your local poison control center.
