Seropram: Drug Information

Generic name: Citalopram

Drug Class: Selective Serotonin reuptake Inhibitor, Antidepressant

Uses of Seropram:

Seropram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is used to treat major depressive disorder accompanied by sadness, inability to concentrate, marked feelings of worthlessness and lack of appetite. It is also used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder but it has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment of this disorder. Seropram is strictly prohibited for administering to patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder as it has the potential to cause rapid mood swings from a depressive to manic state.

Dosage:

Seropram is a prescription drug that can be injected orally and must be taken as prescribed by your doctor. You can take this medicine with or without food at regular intervals everyday. Do not stop taking this drug all of a sudden as it may result in a number of undesirable withdrawal symptoms and may even worsen you present condition.

Warning and Precautions:

Do not take Seropram if you are allergic to SSRIs.

This medicine should not be taken if you are on monoamine oxiase inhibitor (MAOI) therapy. It can only be taken after discontinuation of MAOIs or at least 2 weeks.

In case, the patient enters a manic phase characterized by euphoria, slurred speech, excitability and bizarre behavior, intake of this medicine should be immediately halted.

Safety of Seropram has not been established during pregnancy can lactation.

Drug Interactions:

Seropram is known to interact with various drugs. Caution is advised when taking this medicine along with lithium and tryptophan. Cimetidine and Sumatriptan should not be taken along with Seropram.

Side Effects:

Some of the most common side effects of the drug include increased sweating, headache, tremors, dizziness, somnolence, insomnia, nervousness, aggression, constipation, diarrhea, heart palpitation, appearance of rash, pruritus, paraesthesia, migraine, sleep pattern disturbances, inability to concentrate, altered taste, decreased libido, amnesia, vomiting, mental confusion, vivid dreams, anxiety, rhinitis, fatigue, increased salivation, dyspepsia, apathy and anorexia.
