Moclobemide is used to treat major depression and social phobias. It is a reversible and inhibitor of monoamine oxidase-A isozyme. It helps alleviate tension, anxiety associated with depression, nervousness and restlessness. It does not have any unpleasant cardiovascular, sedative, cognitive and psychomotor effects. As compared to tricyclic antidepressants and non-selective irreversible MAO inhibitors, it is better tolerated.

Moclobemide can be taken orally as directed by your physician at regular intervals with or without food. DO NOT stop taking the medicine even if you begin to feel better without consulting your doctor.

Warning and precautions:

Moclobemide should not be given to patients who show hypersensitivity to the drug

Do not take this medicine if you have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective psychosis and experience delusions, hallucinations and acute confusion.

This drug is not recommended for patients diagnosed with pheochromocytoma (neuroendocrine tumor of the medulla of the adrenal glands).

Moclobemide should not be given to infants and children and must be kept out of their reach.

Tell your doctor if you are suffering from hypertension, kidney disease, liver disease, enlarged prostrate, hypothyroidism, heart disease or brain tumors before taking this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating before taking this medicine. Moclobemide passes into the breast milk and should not be taken by nursing mothers.

Caution and close drug monitoring is advised when administering this drug to the elderly as it may cause lightheadedness and confusion.

Drug Interaction:

Do not take selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) with Moclobemide. Also avoid medicines such as meperidine and codeine with Moclobemide.
