Limbitrol: Drug Information

Generic name: Chlordiazepoxide, amitriptyline

Uses of Limbitrol:

Limbitrol is recommended for the treatment of major depressive disorder associated with anxiety and nervous tension. Melancholic depression or endogenous depression responds to this medicine to a greater extent than to other medicines. Limbitrol also helps reduce feelings of sadness, tension and restlessness. It has significant anticholinergic properties and sedative action. Limbitrol is a combination of two drugs- Chlordiazepoxide and amitriptyline and works by inhibiting the neuronal reuptake of non-adrenaline and serotonin in the brain.

Warning and Precautions:

Limbitrol should not be taken if you are hypersensitive to it or to any other drugs, particularly chlordiazepoxide and amitriptyline.

This drug is not recommended for patients receiving mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) during the acute recovery phase following MI.

Caution is advised when administering this drug to patients diagnosed with or having a history of conduction abnormalities, Bipolar illness, kidney or liver disease, MI, cardiovascular disease, psychosis or epilepsy.

Therefore, it is essential for you to tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines for other ailments such as for ulcers, Parkinsonism, thyroid disorder, cardiovascular disease, oral contraceptives, sinusitis, brain tumors and asthma. Reduced serum levels have been noticed when Limbitrol is co-administered with barbiturates.Neuroleptics inhibit the metabolism of Limbitrol. Antiparkinson agents and antipsychotic drugs should not be taken along with this medicine as they increase the risk of aggravating its anticholinergic effects. Limbitrol reduces the effect of antihypertensive medications any may result in marked hyperpyrexia, convulsions and coma with MAOIs.
